15th International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy

The 15th International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy was held from July 20-22, 2017 at the Ethiopian Economics Association(EEA) conference hall. The Ethiopian strategic support program (ESSP) of the collaborative program of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Ethiopian Development Research institute co-organized the conference with EEA.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn made the opening remark and said the rapid economic growth being registered in the country is accelerating Ethiopia’s target of joining the group of lower middle income countries. He added, due attention has been given to modernize the country’s agriculture, expand industry and strengthen the involvement of the private sector in the economic activities of the country.   Therefore, professional associations are expected to contribute their share for the all-round development of the country through capacity building, generating new ideas, designing draft policies and conducting researches.

Following the remark, Alemayehu Seyoum (PhD) president of EEA, said the association has been providing capacity building trainings, organizing conferences and conducting researches which could be used as inputs for the country’s economic policies since the establishment of the association in 1992.

About 80 papers were presented in five plenary and five breakout sessions with the attendance of about 956 participants in the three days conference. The association honored two prominent economists of which Prof. Belay Kassa for his considerable contribution to the teaching of economics at the University, and Getnet Alemu (PhD) for his considerable contribution and support to EEA’s advancement.

The association was also celebrated its 25th anniversary along with the conference.
