Urban Public Transport Service, Demand-Supply Analysis: the Case of Mekelle

This study examined the demand and supply of urban public transport service in Mekelle city, northern Ethiopia. The results presented were based on primary data collected from a random sample of 140 urban public transport service suppliers and 400 transport users. Descriptive statistics, OLS, and Probit were employed as analytical techniques. Descriptive analysis showed that there was mismatching between demand for and supply of the transport service  and residents failed to get the right service at the right time. OLS was used to look at determinants of supply of and demand for urban public transportation service and Probit method helped to address modal choice and factors influencing it. Long distance from the central departure point of transport service affects negatively the average trip per time of the service supply. Similarly, increasing family size by one person and age of household head on average by one year, lead to increase the probability of demand for urban public transport by17.1 percent and 0.05 percent, respectively. However, for an increase of price of the service by 1 percent, the demand for the service significantly decreases by 19.4 percent. The recommendations of the study note that there is a need to introduce a new system of administering the existing route structure to make it competitive and open ended, and launching an alternative mode of transport would be a sound intervention in solving the persistent supply problem.
